The Lute Case and All Its Implications (Closely Touching Prevost)

The so-called Lute case (the nickname of Father Eleuterio Vásquez González, parish priest of the Chiclayo diocese in Peru) remains a subject of debate, not only within the Church. Vásquez was accused of sexually abusing three underage sisters, whom he allegedly had spend the night with in a parochial residence in the highlands. The complaints were filed directly with the then Bishop of Chiclayo, Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV; subsequently, in November 2025, the Vatican granted Father Lute a dispensation from the clerical state (a favour, not a sanction). However, the lawyer representing the victims, canonist Father Ricardo Coronado Arrascue, has been barred from acting on their behalf.
