Unbroken: News from the Church in China
One sentence in a popular Qing dynasty book by the Manchu novelist, Wen Kang (文康, fl. 1850) describes China’s Catholics today. “Bend a hundred times but never break (百折不撓)!”1
Sitting in the room with Chinese priests and nuns is always an exercise of patient listening and reading between the lines. Sometimes—it is not typically characteristic of Chinese culture to speak directly—someone is blunt. That is when I sit up.
