Archbishop who considered Francis antipope says SSPX excommunications are invalid

Archbishop Jan Pawel Lenga said the excommunications are evidence that the Vatican has departed from Christ and authentic faith.

Archbishop Jan Pawel Lenga, a former bishop in Kazakhstan known for surviving communism and his previous outspoken criticism of Pope Francis and the direction of the Catholic hierarchy, sharply criticized the Vatican’s excommunication of the priests and laity of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) after its July 1 consecration of four new bishops without a papal mandate while praising the order.

The Holy See’s recent statement on the episcopal consecrations of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX) continues to spark reactions within the Church. Dom Alcuin Reid, a Benedictine monk, liturgist, and one of the most recognized voices in the traditional liturgical movement, publishes a reflection on AdVaticanum in which he calls for a renewed effort at reconciliation and warns that the Church cannot resign itself to seeing a new schism take root.
