Vatican statistics reveal stunning collapse of Catholic Church in France
Vatican data show France’s Catholic Church lost 68% of its priests and 72% of its parishes since 1980, and baptisms, marriages and religious vocations also plunged.
Earlier today, the Holy See Press Office published pastoral statistics for the Catholic Church in France covering 1980 to 2024, compiled by the Vatican’s Central Office for Church Statistics. The figures, released just one week before antipope Leo XIV’s apostolic visit, document a collapse in the Church’s sacramental and institutional life.
